SHORT BREED DESCRIPTION:
Dutch Shepherds are medium-sized, muscular herding dogs from the Netherlands. They have wedge-shaped heads and almond-shaped eyes. Their ears stand upright. The tail hangs down with a slight curve at the end when resting. The feet have arched toes.
Sharing a similar standard to Belgian and German Shepherds, the Dutch Shepherd’s origin can be traced to the same continental herding dogs. This breed evolved in the early 1800s in the southern part of the Netherlands and Belgium.
The Dutch Shepherds are among the most competent of all shepherd dogs at such tasks as agility, catch, obedience competitions, guard work, herding, field trailing and companionship. Unwanted visitors will be stopped in their tracks, while known family friends will be greeted enthusiastically. Dutch Shepherds enjoy the company of their own kind and get along fine with other animals. Intelligent, easy to obedience train and eager to learn—they learn new commands quite easily. This breed makes an excellent watch and guard dog.
They are also smart and energetic, making them ideal for active families. They are loyal and protective, love children, and get along with other animals. Training and socialization, along with exercise, are extremely important. These dogs need physical and mental outlets for their high energy and stamina to prevent negative behaviors. Luckily, they’re easy to train.
