Punishment. As much as nobody enjoys talking about it or doing it, it has a time and a place for all animals. It’s how we (and dogs) learn.
For example, let’s use the dog trying to attack a moving lawn mower, the dog who wants to drink dirty stagnant water, the dog who chases livestock, eats poop, charges at fireworks, etc. The list goes on and on. A properly timed punishment could be the difference between life and death for these dogs.
It is our obligation to our pets to guide them and lead them through this already chaotic world that we chose to make them a part of. It’s our responsibility to teach our dogs right from wrong, even when it’s uncomfortable.
Rewarding or distracting a dog out of a dangerous behavior they want to do is a disservice to the animal. They are not learning from it, therefor, they will continue to do it. You will continue chasing this behavior forever instead of teaching your dog a valuable lesson.
A split second correction to stop an unwanted behavior is actually one of the most loving things you can do for your dog. If we don’t show our dogs how to avoid harm, more than likely nature will do it for us, and nature is not always fair.
Show your dog how to exist in an ever-changing world. Be the leader they need and the advocate they require. Be a responsible dog owner and keep your pet safe regardless of the emotional response behind it. Corrections are learning opportunities and they are absolutely a vital part of life.
